Senators are headed for another showdown with governors following a fresh attempt to impeach Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana.

It emerged Monday that the Makueni County Assembly has filed a fresh petition at the Senate to impeach the Prof Kibwana only days after President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Council of Governors initiated the process of dissolving the troubled county government.

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale confirmed that the Senate had received a petition from the county assembly seeking to impeach Prof Kibwana and would soon meet to discuss it.

He maintained that the President lacked the powers to dissolve a county government and could only suspend it for a period of ninety days.

MAXMUM OF 90 DAYS

“The President in consultation with the Senate can only suspend a county government for a maximum of ninety days to give room for efforts to end the wrangles.

“If the Senate is not convinced that those wrangles have been sorted out after the ninety day window, the county government automatically stands dissolved,” he explained.

A section of Makueni MCAs opposed the move to dissolve the county government, saying they do not have money to campaign in the event fresh elections are called.

They maintained that they were not ready to be subjected to a fresh election before their official five-year term comes to an end.
