Githu fends off critics of legislation

The Attorney-General Thursday said the Security Bill was in the hands of lawmakers, and he trusted them to make the right decision.

The Bill that is in its second reading will be tabled in Parliament today for the third reading.

However, many questions went unanswered by Prof Githu Muigai during a question and answer session with Kenyans on social media.

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale wrote: “Why is your government killing constitutionalism? The draconian laws are very retrogressive!”

Prof Muigai said besides terrorism, he considers ignorance and corruption as the big threats to the rule of law.

Asked by Muntu-O-Mbiti if there was any law to prosecute a senator who insults the president, Prof Muigai said: “Freedom of speech has its limits,” added the AG.

Meanwhile the Trade Unions Congress of Kenya also raised concern over a clause that gives powers to the Cabinet Secretary to designate areas where public processions may be held.

Congress Secretary-General Wilson Sossion said this contravenes the freedom to picket. He said workers will team up with other Kenyans to block the law.
