Governors deny using cash for poll

What you need to know:

  • Some politicians have accused governors of diverting funds meant for development to campaigns.
  • A politician was recently quoted saying that each of the 47 counties is contributing Sh22 million to the CoG for its operations.

Governors on Monday denied using public money to fund their referendum campaigns.

The county bosses, who have been campaigning through the Council of Governors (CoG), which is funded from public coffers, said the quest to have the law changed is their initiative.

During the weekend rallies convened in Bomet and Kakamega counties to officially launch the collection of signatures from voters, which is part of their bid to push for a constitutional amendment, the event was covered live on one national television station.

“We funded the whole initiative with the assistance of people from the grassroots,” Bomet governor Isaac Ruto and his Kakamega counterpart Wycliffe Oparanya said through the CoG spokesman, Barrack Muluka.

ACCUSED OF DIVERTING FUNDS

Some politicians have accused governors of diverting funds meant for development to campaigns.

A politician was recently quoted saying that each of the 47 counties is contributing Sh22 million to the CoG for its operations, which include pushing for the constitutional amendment.

But Mr Muluka said that counties have only seconded some of their staff to work for the council.

Other staff working for the council, he added, had been seconded by the Public Service Commission.
