The Council of Governors has welcomed the High Court decision to reinstate Martin Wambora as Embu governor

The council chairman Isaac Ruto said the decision will safeguard devolution gains.

“The Council of Governors believes that devolution faces numerous challenges but if each Kenyan played their role to safeguard the system then gains will accrue to the entire nation,” said Mr Ruto in a statement to newsrooms.

Mr Ruto observed that when Kenyans voted for the new constitution, they made a very strong and resolute statement that devolution was the only solution to that which had failed in the country in the 50 years of its independence.

“As the first Governors of the 47 counties of Kenya, history will judge us harshly if we allow devolution to fail and we promise that failure is not an option,” said the council chairman.

He observed that governors support the principle of separation of powers and called for the respect of the Judiciary.

“All levels of Government must be respected in the execution of their constitutional mandate, this will give public confidence in the leadership and governance of our country and guarantee stability,” Mr Ruto said.

High court judges Cecilia Githua, Hedwig Ong’udi and Boaz Olao sitting in Kerugoya on Wednesday overturned the decision of the Embu County assembly and Senate that impeached the governor in February for alleged abuse of office and corruption.
