  • Mr Mwiru got into trouble two weeks ago when Lands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu skipped a meeting with the committee to discuss the Karen land saga and instead went to the Constitutional Implementation Oversight Committee.

Tharaka MP Alex Mwiru Tuesday survived an attempt to remove him as National Assembly Lands Committee chairman.

It is understood Mr Mwiru’s United Republican Party might have convinced MPs on the committee, most of whom signed the petition to remove him, to back down.

The Nation learnt that the MPs agreed not to proceed with the vote of no-confidence at a mid-morning meeting and gave Mr Mwiru 60 days to put his act together.

A member of the House team said it had asked Director of Committees Florence Atenyo-Bonyo to explain the House rules and procedure on such matters.

“We gave the chairman time to explain himself and after that, we felt we needed to sanction him for 60 days,” said Vice-Chairman Moses ole Sakuda.

The petition, signed by 23 members, alleged Mr Mwiru had failed to offer effective leadership to the members.

It also claimed he lacked passion for the job, blocked free expression he had failed to inform members on decisions to postpone meetings.

Some of the issues include the impasse between the National Land Commission and its parent ministry and land issues in Lamu and Karen.
