IEBC, EACC to issue rules on barring candidates from vying

  • Mr Wafula Chebukati, Mr Boinnet and Chief Justice Maraga will address a meeting on election preparedness
  • Government Spokesman Eric Kiraithe will also make his address about the elections.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will Wednesday, jointly with the anti-corruption commission, decide on who can be barred from running for an elective seat over integrity issues.

IEBC Commissioner Roselyn Akombe on Tuesday said that the agency will, together with the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission issue guidelines on who among them has the authority to stop politicians who have corruption cases from running for office.

“We have presented the regulations to guide nominations and take us to the elections to Parliament which we hope will be published before the nominations. Anyone who will be caught in this will be free to come to the commission,” said Ms Akombe.

CHEBUKATI, MARAGA, BOINNET MEET

At the same time, IEBC vice chairman Consolata Nkatha Bucha, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet and Mr Justice Msagha Mbogholi, chairman of the Judiciary Committee on Elections, will Wednesday morning address an election preparedness meeting.

The meeting to be held at the Ufungamano House has been organised by the Multi Sectoral Forum, which brings together the Inter-Religious Council of Kenya.

“The forum will culminate in the recommendation of specific actions to the Executive, Parliament, Judiciary, media, electoral governance institutions and the general public with the view to fast-tracking the electoral process so as to ensure the August 2017 elections are peaceful, free, fair and credible,” a statement from the organisers says.

Meanwhile, government Spokesman Eric Kiraithe will at 11am Wednesday also make his address about the elections.

Mr Kiraithe will also talk about security.
