The government has been accused of tapping telephone conversations between Cord co-principal Raila Odinga and Council of Governors chairman Isaac Ruto.

Aldai MP Cornelius Serem claims the espionage comes after the government received information that the two were working together “to undermine President Kenyatta’s administration”.

The MP sensationally claimed that State machinery intercepted messages exchanged between Mr Odinga and Mr Ruto amid claims that the governor was “being groomed to be Mr Odinga’s running mate at the 2017 General Election”.

AWARE OF 'SCHEMES'

Mr Serem, a fierce critic of Mr Odinga, made the claims at a funds drive in Nandi County on Sunday.

“The Jubilee government is aware of political schemes by the Cord leader and governor Ruto and that the two leaders want to contest against President Kenyatta and his deputy in 2017,” he claimed.

He further claimed that the scheme by Mr Odinga was meant to split the Kalenjin and scuttle Rift Valley votes to block Deputy President William Ruto from becoming president.

“Mr Ruto should reject the Cord leader’s offer because the Kalenjin will not denounce the DP,” he said.

The legislator added that Jubilee MPs would not allow Mr Odinga to use the referendum to take over power illegally since both the President and his deputy were elected democratically.

“Unless the Kalenjin agree to rally behind the DP, President Kenyatta will drop Mr Ruto in 2017 and appoint United Democratic Front leader Musalia Mudavadi to replace him and the Kalenjin will have themselves to blame,” he said.
