Jubilee Party nominees from 11 counties in central Kenya have resolved to start holding joint campaign rallies.
The announcement comes in the wake of independent candidates launching a movement and declaring a political battle with those who clinched Jubilee tickets at the primaries.
The 40 aspirants retreated to Sweetwaters Tented Camp in Nanyuki on Saturday to craft a campaign strategy to garner as many votes as possible for themselves and President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Addressing the media after the closed-door meeting, Kirinyaga governor nominee Anne Waiguru, said their main agenda was to craft a campaign strategy that would ensure President Kenya is re-elected with a landslide on August 8.
While they appeared unshaken by the independent candidates’ declaration of a major political battle, it was evident the strategy to hold joint campaign rallies is to support those facing serious challenge from independents.
JOINT PUBLIC RALLIES
“We have agreed to hold joint public rallies across the 11 counties with one scheduled for Murang’a on Monday. We are also requesting the independent candidates to join us as we campaign together for President Kenyatta,” said Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria.
Mr Amos Kimunya, the Jubilee MP nominee for Kipipiri, said whoever was willing to campaign for the President was free to join them.
Mr Kimunya said they were not worried by their opponents because they had been given mandate by the electorate to represent them.
INTIMIDATING AGENCIES
He said more than 60 per cent of voters in the region took part in the nominations, an indication that those who made it then would succeed on August 8.
In Meru, Jubilee politicians accused the opposition alliance of intimidating independent agencies for personal gain.
The leaders said Nasa should allow the Judiciary and the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to do their work as stipulated by the Constitution.
The leaders, who spoke during a rally at Kibirichia sports ground in Buuri on Sunday, were led by Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi and Igembe South MP Mithika Linturi.
