What you need to know:

  • The Cord Coalition has been pushing for a referendum under the Okoa Kenya movement, seeking increase of funds allocated to counties and a response to various issues affecting Kenyans.
  • Mr Musyoka said that the country was in a state of helplessness and declared that President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto had failed to live up to the expectation of Kenyans.
  • He reminded Wiper MPs who are working with the Jubilee government that their time was up and they should be ready to resign and seek fresh mandate on a TNA ticket.

Cord co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka Sunday said the coalition was ready to drop its push for a referendum if the Jubilee Government agreed to invite them for talks.

Mr Musyoka said it was not too late to hold the talks.

The national dialogue would address concerns raised by Kenyans over governance as well as review of some sections of the Constitution that needed to be changed.

INCREASE FUNDS

“We can solve all issues that we have said without going to a contested referendum,” Mr Musyoka said at Africa Brotherhood Church in Makadara, Nairobi. He was accompanied by Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama and Kitui East MP Mutua Muluvi among other leaders.

The Cord Coalition has been pushing for a referendum under the Okoa Kenya movement, seeking increase of funds allocated to counties and a response to various issues affecting Kenyans.

Mr Musyoka said that the country was in a state of helplessness and declared that President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto had failed to live up to the expectation of Kenyans.

“We have seen Americans coming all the way to arrest drug barons in Mombasa yet we have a government. What that tells you is that we have a government and police service that is compromised by drug barons,” said the former Vice-President.

He said many Kenyan children had been turned into zombies by drugs.

Mr Musyoka alleged that the government was fighting corruption selectively, with the target being those who support Cord, such as Mr Muthama.

“I want to call upon the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Chairman Mumo Matemu to crack the whip and stop receiving directives from the government on who to prosecute,” said Mr Musyoka.

He reminded Wiper MPs who are working with the Jubilee government that their time was up and they should be ready to resign and seek fresh mandate on a TNA ticket. “If you want to work with Jubilee government, you are betraying the people who elected you. We will not allow you to double-deal. The electorate are ready to reject such leaders at any time,” said Mr Musyoka.

He said all Wiper senators, governors, MPs and members of county assemblies owed him respect, but some were abusing him with the aim of getting monetary support from Jubilee.

“When they were seeking the seats, they were using my name; now they are abusing me. We will wait for them come 2017,” said the Wiper leader. Mr Muthama called for the dissolution of parties that make up the Cord coalition so that they can form a single, strong political party.

END SELFISHNESS

“We have heard several candidates from Ford Kenya, ODM and Wiper competing in an election yet they claim they belong to Cord. We must end this selfishness and work together,” he said.

He asked Kenyans to support the push for allocation of more money to counties.
