Members of Parliament from central Kenya have decided to drop a planned censure motion against National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale.

They said the motion would be substituted with a Bill that seeks compensation for victims of terrorism attacks.

The sponsor of the motion, Kieni MP Kanini Kega, said the lawmakers have dropped the censure motion to push for a law that would benefit the families of those killed in terrorist attacks in Kenya.

Mr Kega said the leaders arrived at the decision Thursday when they met at a Nairobi hotel.

He said the Bill would give Sh5 million in compensation to families of terrorism victims.

The national and county governments would contribute to the payment, he said.

The national government would be compelled to pay Sh3 million and the government of the county where the attack takes place would pay Sh2 million.

The MP spoke on Thursday in Gathathini Village in Kieni when he handed over cheques to families of 11 quarry workers who were recently killed in Mandera in an attack by the Al-Shabaab.

Last week, the fate of the motion was thrown into confusion after Deputy Speaker Joyce Laboso said she had not seen it though its sponsor said it had been forwarded to her office.

Mr Kega said he submitted the document to the Office of the Speaker last week but had neither received a response nor seen it listed on the Order Paper.
