Karua comes out guns blazing

What you need to know:

  • The former presidential candidate had no kind words for Mr Duale and Mr Moses Kuria, the Gatundu South MP who, in what he said was a public confession for the “Ruto fixing scheme” dragged in Ms Karua’s name and that of Cord leader Raila Odinga.
  • Jubilee MPs, led by Mr Duale, claimed at Parliament Buildings on Tuesday it was at that time that she hired Mr Kuria and others to create evidence to fix Mr Ruto.

Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua has hit back at Jubilee MPs over claims she fixed Deputy President William Ruto at the International Criminal Court and accused President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy of harassing her.

“When you see a dog barking, look for the owner and I know the owner is Uhuru,” she declared.

“I am asking Uhuru to stop using his office to harass me, he should stop using the presidency to attack me,” she told the Press at the Jacaranda Hotel in Nairobi yesterday.

She was accompanied by lawyer Gitobu Imanyara.

Responding to statements by the MPs, Ms Karua threatened to sue Leader of Majority Aden Duale for contempt and challenged those making the allegations to file charges against her.

“If I have done anything criminal, get me charged. If indeed it’s true a certain character used to work for me, produce proof,” she dared.

The former presidential candidate had no kind words for Mr Duale and Mr Moses Kuria, the Gatundu South MP who, in what he said was a public confession for the “Ruto fixing scheme” dragged in Ms Karua’s name and that of Cord leader Raila Odinga.

“My name shall not be uttered carelessly by people who have never made a name in this country other than being a nuisance,” she said.

Ms Karua was Justice minister in the Kibaki administration.

Jubilee MPs, led by Mr Duale, claimed at Parliament Buildings on Tuesday it was at that time that she hired Mr Kuria and others to create evidence to fix Mr Ruto.

But yesterday, Ms Karua claimed the President and his deputy were behind what she termed a smear campaign against her. She described Mr Duale and the Jubilee MPs as the President’s attack dogs.

She said her lawyer will advise her on the next course of action.

Mr Imanyara said the allegations against Ms Karua were highly scandalous.

“When we say we will take action, we will,” he said.

Ms Karua added: “Mr Duale, if you think you have the immunity of Parliament to make such careless statements, know that you will be held to account within the coming two to three days.”

She challenged Mr Ruto to defend himself in connection with the claims. “No one is asking where the master is when he was being fixed. We haven’t heard him on this, we are yet to hear from him,” she said. “Why hide if you are innocent?” she asked.

The Jubilee MPs’ statement followed Mr Odinga’s claims on Tuesday that President Kenyatta was at the heart of the plot to fix Mr Ruto at the Hague court.
