Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero has opposed the move by the National Assembly to return level four and five hospitals under the national government, saying it would bring back mismanagement and poor services.

Dr Kidero has called for patience and more money for county governments to execute their mandate.

“Devolution is working, we have upgraded Pumwani with seven theatres and this year we plan on spending Sh910 million towards rehabilitation and upgrade of key health facilities,” he said.

The county development vote on hospitals in this year’s budget has allocated Sh100 million to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, Sh250 million to Pumwani Maternity, and Sh150 million to Mbagathi. Another Sh120 million will be used in revamping dispensaries. This week, Dr Kidero unveiled the new 120-bed capacity Mbagathi Level Four maternity wing.

Health Executive Timothy Kingondu had indicated that all the improvements are part of the five-year health strategic plan that the county will start to implement this financial year.

But a report by the House Health Committee adopted by the National Assembly recommended that level four and five hospitals be taken back by the national government, which if implemented will throw a spanner into the works and plans made by the county.
