Controversy over the county that hosts the multi-billion-shilling Konza technology city reared its head in the Senate on Wednesday.

The Senate was entangled in a debate over whether Konza Techno City was in Machakos or Makueni, when Senator George Khaniri (Vihiga, UDF) tabled a statement from the Ministry of Lands.

A ministerial statement from Lands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu had placed the mega project in Machakos, prompting a protest from Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Jnr (Wiper).

Mr Kilonzo said the 5,000-acre property purchased from Malili ranch by the government for the project was in Makueni, according to the Districts and Provinces Act of 1992.

Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula and his Siaya counterpart James Orengo supported his claims.
