Politician in Western Kenya have scheduled a meeting to launch a campaign to register six million voters.

The meeting, which will be held at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega on December 22, is also expected to name a spokesman for the community.

Lugari MP Ayub Savula, who is among the planners, Sunday denied former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo’s claim that Amani Coalition leader Musalia Mudavadi would be paraded as a potential presidential candidate.

“Our focus is to strategise on how we can have at least six million people from Western register as voters ahead of the 2017 General Election,” he said.
Rebranding gimmick

Mr Savula said leaders from the former Western Province — Bungoma, Kakamega, Busia, Vihiga and Trans-Nzoia — would deliberate on socio-economic and political challenges in the region.

Cotu Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has been appointed to chair the meeting.

Mr Jirongo was recently quoted in the media dismissing the meeting as a political rebranding gimmick for Mr Mudavadi’s UDF party.

Mr Jirongo said parading leaders before the public in order to endorse one of them to fly the community’s flag was not the best approach.
