MPs accuse State of using undue force

A section of MPs on Tuesday threatened to seek international intervention over rising insecurity and also accused security agencies of using excessive force.

The MPs led by Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim condemned the violence in Garissa and Eastleigh and blamed it on what they described as failed Government security machinery.

The legislators demanded justice for those affected saying women have been raped and properties destroyed in the mayhem.

“There is serious problem. There are excesses beyond belief. We won’t stop seeking justice even if it means going international like the 2007/2008 post-election violence case. Those responsible must be apprehended,” said Mr Maalim, who is also the Ladgera Constituency MP.

Wajir West MP Adan Keynan said the rising insecurity cases must be investigated.

“There must be some leaders preparing this country for some sort of civil war,” he stated.

He said it was upsetting that few arrests have been made and suspects arraigned in court over the recent grenade attacks.

“Communities have lost faith in the Government security machinery and are suspicious, we want to see the Government take action,” he stated.

In Parliament, Mr Maalim claimed Garissa businessmen have lost an excess of Sh1.5 billion to Sh2billion following the recent mayhem.

He demanded a statement from the Defence Ministry on KDF’s presence in Garissa.

Mr Maalim questioned whether constitutional provisions have been followed in having them involved in maintaining law and order which requires Parliament's approval.

He claimed that Dujis MP Aden Duale was almost shot dead in the disorder in Garissa.

“The place is a battle ground it looks like a scene from Syria,” he said.

Defence Assistant Minister David Musila promised to issue a statement on Tuesday.
