MPs likely to forego recess over poll laws

What you need to know:

  • The National Assembly is slated to go on recess from Friday next week to October 2, but that could change because of the urgency and the need to pass the changes to the law meant to make the next elections credible.
  • This means that the Senate and the National Assembly have to debate and adopt the report of the committee co-chaired by senators James Orengo and Kiraitu Murungi and then pass the two Bills to get things going at the IEBC

MPs may have give up their one-month vacation as Parliament passes Bills developed by the joint select committee on electoral reforms.

The National Assembly is slated to go on recess from Friday next week to October 2, but that could change because of the urgency and the need to pass the changes to the law meant to make the next elections credible.

Among the select committee’s recommendations was that the new members of the electoral commission take office by the end of September.

This means that the Senate and the National Assembly have to debate and adopt the report of the committee co-chaired by senators James Orengo and Kiraitu Murungi and then pass the two Bills to get things going at the IEBC.

The proposed laws are: The Election Laws (Amendment) Bill and the Election Offences Bill.

The one on election laws provides for amendments to the Elections Act, the Political Parties Act and the IEBC Act.
