MPs protest over House team report

Five Cord MPs have protested that their report on the electoral commission was excluded in the final version tabled in the National Assembly on Thursday.

They had prepared a separate minority report that was different from that of the majority members.

Following three days of fiery debate among 29 members of the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee on the conduct of the electoral commission chairman Samuel Chepkonga (Ainabkoi, URP) appears to have outwitted the Cord members and presented a joint report without the minority’s appendage.

MPs Peter Kaluma (Homa Bay Town), David Ochieng (Ugenya), Agostino Neto (Ndhiwa), Christine Ombaka (Siaya County, ODM) and T.J. Kajwang’ (Ruaraka), who prepared the separate report, expressed their frustration.

True reflection

The disgruntled members intend to formally challenge the report before the House, through the Speaker.

They insist that it is not a true reflection of what transpired in the committee deliberations. The final report only acknowledges their views in three pages at the end.

The minority group had recommended that the President forms a tribunal to investigate Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman and members for incompetence, gross professional misconduct and violation of the Constitution, which they compiled separately to be annexed to the final report.

They had even leaked the report to the media. The report was triggered by a petition by Mr Wafula Buke seeking the sacking of the electoral commissioners.
