  • The Two Third Gender Laws (Amendment Bill) 2015 seeks to amend various laws to give effect to Article100 of the Constitution.
  • It remains to be seen whether the women MPs will get the necessary two thirds support of the House.

MPs will on Wednesday vote on whether to approve a Bill seeking to amend the Constitution to allow for the nomination of more women to Parliament to meet the gender rule threshold.

The Bill, sponsored by National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale, states that if elected women do not meet the two thirds gender rule, then the remaining number will be filled through nominations.

Parliament has been struggling to find ways to meet the gender rule provided for in Article 27 of the Constitution, with women lawmakers in both the National Assembly and the Senate piling pressure on the leadership of the two Houses to ensure the rule is met.

The Kenya Parliamentary Women Association (Kewopa) on Tuesday held a dinner at the Inter-Continental Hotel to lobby their male colleagues to support the Bill when it is tabled in the House.

It remains to be seen whether the women MPs will get the necessary two thirds support of the House.

The Two Third Gender Laws (Amendment Bill) 2015 seeks to amend various laws to give effect to Article100 of the Constitution.

It seeks to promote representation in Parliament of women, youth, people with disabilities, ethnic minorities and marginalised communities in elective and appointive positions.
