Politicians vying for elective seats will have to be cleared by the Education ministry before the electoral commission allows them to contest in the General Election.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati said they would rely on the ministry to determine if academic papers presented by aspirants are genuine.

He said, “As a Commission we need other agencies to certify qualifications of candidates and that is why we shall be depending on the ministry.”

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Mataing’i said, “We need to have a way to ensure challenges we had in the past where individuals, not necessarily candidates, presented credentials that are not legitimate.

"That way we will fight credibility affecting our education system.”

The officials spoke at the ministry headquarters in Nairobi.
