Three ODM MPs on Thursday said the Treasury’s explanation for authorising the convention of the Cabinet retreat at a hotel in Nanyuki is insufficient.

MPs Kenneth Okoth (Kibra), Abdullahi Diriye (Wajir South) and Agostinho Neto (Ndhiwa) maintained that by having the meeting held at the exclusive Mount Kenya Safari Club, President Kenyatta defied the directive from the Treasury.

“We’ve seen the explanation today by Cabinet Secretary (Henry) Rotich saying that his circular was not a circular or directive. It was just a nice suggestion that could be ignored,” said Mr Okoth during a press conference at Parliament Buildings.

The Kibra MP said the reasons Mr Rotich gave for using “the exclusive, extravagant and extra expensive Mt Kenya Safari Club on holiday for three days” do not justify refusing to hold the retreat at Sagana State Lodge.

In a statement on Wednesday that was later withdrawn and replaced, Mr Rotich had said his circular to the rest of the Executive had not made it a requirement for meetings to be held in government establishments.
