Mungatana and Mwiraria lose out as Leakey returns to head wildlife agency

  • The position has been given to Mr Marsden Madoka, who once served as President Jomo Kenyatta’s aide-de-camp before he joined politics and later appointed as the chairman of the Kenya Revenue Authority. He also served as a minister under President Moi.

Former Finance minister David Mwiraria is among the losers in the public appointments announced Monday.

Mr Mwiraria, who was a minister in the Kibaki administration, was replaced by Dr Richard Leakey as the chairman of the Kenya Wildlife Service board.

Dr Leakey, a renowned conservationist, served as KWS director for several years during President Moi’s rule. He is also a director of the National Museums of Kenya.
Mr Mwiraria was appointed to the KWS board by President Kibaki after he lost the North Imenti parliamentary seat in 2007.

Mr Danson Mungatana, who was an assistant minister in the Kibaki government, has lost his position as the Kenya Ports Authority board chairman.

The position has been given to Mr Marsden Madoka, who once served as President Jomo Kenyatta’s aide-de-camp before he joined politics and later appointed as the chairman of the Kenya Revenue Authority. He also served as a minister under President Moi.

Mr Mungatana, who like Mr Madoka hails from the coast region, was appointed KPA chairman last year by President Kenyatta.
He had lost the Tana River gubernatorial seat to his rival, Mr Hussein Dado. Before he vied for the seat, he was Garsen MP for two terms.

Kenya Pipeline Company chairman Daniel Wamahiu has been moved to National Oil Corporation of Kenya as chairman of the board of directors.
The young businessman from Nyeri County was among the people who actively campaigned for President Kenyatta during the 2013 elections.

The long-serving chairman of the Rift Valley Water Services Board, Mr Chesaina Bartonjo, has been replaced by former Nakuru Mayor John Kitilit.

Mr Kitilit is Deputy President William Ruto’s ally, while the former supported Kanu during the 2013 elections. Mr Bartonjo’s term of office had expired.

In the elections, Mr Kitilit unsuccessfully vied for the Rongai parliamentary seat in Nakuru, on a URP ticket. However, he was defeated by Mr Raymond Moi of Kanu.
