Quit party, Musalia Mudavadi tells George Khaniri

What you need to know:

  • “He should get out of my way as I am not in competition with him.”
  • A war of words between the UDF senator and his party leader started a week ago.

Amani National Congress leader Musalia Mudavadi has asked Vihiga Senator George Khaniri to leave the party if he is not happy in it.

In a statement on Sunday, Mr Mudavadi asked the senator to look for another political vehicle ahead of the 2017 General Election.

“Khaniri does not need to weigh options ahead of 2017. He should get out of my way as I am not in competition with him,” Mr Mudavadi said through his press secretary, Mr Kibisu Kabatesi.

A war of words between the UDF senator and his party leader started a week ago, after Mr Khaniri accused Mr Mudavadi of abandoning the Luhya community, which voted for him overwhelmingly in 2013.

NEW POLITICAL VEHICLE

Mr Khaniri had hosted former National Assembly Speaker Kenneth Marende and former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo in Hamisi, where the two announced the formation of United Democratic Party.

On Sunday, the senator said he would re-examine his political stand come 2017.

Mr Khaniri also claimed that he got more votes in Vihiga than all the eight presidential candidates in the last elections and did not therefore need patronage from his party leader.

But Mr Mudavadi dismissed the sentiments, saying “comparing the votes he got with those of presidential candidates instead of his opponents is uncalled for because he was not running for a presidential position in Vihiga”.
