Muthama incited people to ‘topple Uhuru’, police officer claims

The incitement case against Machakos Senator Johnston Muthama, in which he is alleged to have told people to “topple” President Uhuru Kenyatta begun Friday.

Sergeant John Gichuhi told the court that Mr Muthama told a rally at Uhuru Park that President Kenyatta was “unfit to rule Kenya and that he should be toppled.”

He said the politician made the remarks while addressing an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) rally at Uhuru Park Nairobi on September 23, 2015.

He said Muthama told the huge crowd he would ask ODM leader Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka and Senator Moses Wetang’ula to lead the people to remove President Kenyatta from office.

The officer further said, he heard Mr Muthama claim he would ask Mr Odinga , Mr Musyoka and Mr Wetang’ula to proceed to State House to remove President Kenyatta and install a new one.”

He also alleged that he heard Mr Muthama ask Kenyans to boycott work over the then teachers strike and that those who would defy that call “would be stoned.”

He said Mr Odinga, Mr Musyoka and Mr Wetang’ula also addressed the charged crowd.

The officer is currently attached to Imenti Central Directorate of Criminal Investigations office in Meru County.

Muthama and rights activist Japheth Muriira Muroko alias Japheth Thuranira are charged with inciting people to boycott duty “ if teachers demands for salary increments were not met.”

The charge further reads Muthama alleged those who would not participate in the job boycott would be stoned.
