Kamba elders have denied media reports that they endorsed Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua to be the community’s leader.

The Akamba Clans Governing Council of Elders called the reports “misguided information” only aimed at tarnishing the community’s name, adding that at no time did they give Dr Mutua any leadership mandate.

According to the elders’ chairman, Mr Boniface Kilonzo, Dr Mutua gate-crashed the elders, meeting at Masii Boys High School on Tuesday and requested to address the gathering and was allowed to do so.

Mr Kilonzo said the elders were meeting in Machakos to launch their constitution, introduce themselves to their leaders and discuss unity among the Akamba clans.

“He agreed to feed those in attendance, gave them bus fare and promised to buy us a 14-seater vehicle for transport,” they said.

“He talked on his ‘Maendeleo Chap Chap’ initiative and requested permission to take the same to other two Akamba counties and since development has no borders, he was allowed to do so provided he was in agreement with the other governors,” said Mr Kilonzo in a statement to the newsroom Friday.

The elders said they had previously tried in vain to get Dr Mutua to attend their meetings, adding that their outfit is non-political and its role is only to settle disputes between warring parties in the community.
