1.7m ‘did not register’ to vote in Nyanza

More than 1.7 million eligible voters in Nyanza and Western did not register ahead of the 4th March 2013 General Election, a report released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission on the last General Election indicates.

The report notes that more than five million people in the two regions had identification cards as at November 13 2012 and which made them eligible to register as voters.

But only 3.3 million registered while 2.9 million registered voted.

More than 424,904 registered voters did not cast their votes.

The voter turnout in Nyanza was at 89 per cent while in Western it was at 85 per cent in the regions that were ODM dominated.

During the election, President Kenyatta, the Jubilee candidate got 6.1 million votes against CORD’s Raila Odinga who got 5.3 million votes.

IEBC further notes that there was an estimated voting population of 4.5 million as per the 2009 census.

In Western, the data by IEBC indicates that the region had a population of 4.3 million in which two million were estimated as voting population while 2.2 million had identification cards.

More than 1.4 million people were registered as voters using biometric kit while 2,524 registered as voters manually in which the total registered voters stood at 1.43 million.

Those who voted on March 4 were 1.2 million and 220,288 did not vote with the turn out being 85 per cent.

In Nyanza region, the population stood at 5.4 million people in which 2.5m were estimated as voting population with 2.8 million people having identification cards as at 13 November 2012.

More than 1.9 million registered as voters using biometric with 2,408 using non biometric in which a total of 1.9 million were registered as voters.

More than 1.77 million turned up to vote while 204,616 did not and the turnout was 89 per cent in Nyanza.

In Kakamega, the population as per the 2009 census was 1,660,651 people in which 774,194 were estimated to be the voting population. Those who had identification cards as 13 November 2012 were 851,268.

Those who were registered with biometric were 567,460 while 691 were registered manually.

The total registered voters were 568,151 while those who voted on March 4 were 474,779.

Those who did not vote were 93,372 with the voter turnout was 84 per cent.

In Vihiga county, the population as the 2009 census stood at 554,622, about 258,564 were estimated to be voting population while those who had identify cards as at 13 November 2012 were 390,310. About 202,822 registered as voters using the biometric kits while 65 did it manually.

The total number of those who registered as voters was 202,887 while those who voted were 167,573 and those who did not vote stood at 35,314. The turnout was 83 per cent.

According to Ahmed Issack Hassan, the chairperson of Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, they were able to register 14,388,781 voters of which 36,236 were not registered by biometirc machine.
