ODM picks candidate amid grumps

What you need to know:

  • One of the ODM aspirants, Mr Simon Peter ole Nkeri, said he did not recognise the nomination. He claimed Orange Democratic Movement officials had already endorsed a candidate, rendering the election a futility.

The Orange Democratic Movement was holding its nomination for the Kajiado Central constituency by-election, with some aspirants expressing displeasure at the participation of a former Jubilee Alliance member.

The party allowed Mr Memusi Kanchory to vie for the ticket after he lost to Mr Patrick Tuitui in the Jubilee Alliance Party nomination.

The newly registered party signals the merger of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s TNA and Deputy President William Ruto’s URP.

DID NOT RECOGNISE

One of the ODM aspirants, Mr Simon Peter ole Nkeri, said he did not recognise the nomination. He claimed Orange Democratic Movement officials had already endorsed a candidate, rendering the election a futility.

Mr Paul ole Kaika also said he was dissatisfied with Secretary-General Ababu Namwamba’s decision to allow Mr Kanchori’s participate in the ODM primary. He said it was futile to continue to be committed to the ideals of a party that “has already selected its candidate”.

By last evening as we went to press, the nominee had still not been named.
