Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar has dismissed claims that he had a hand in the charges against President Kenyatta and his deputy, Mr William Ruto, at the ICC.

Mr Omar, who was speaking during a meeting at a Mombasa hotel on Sunday, defended himself against “any fixing of anyone”, saying he follows the Constitution.

He was responding to accusations, mainly from social media users, that he incriminated the two leaders.

Mr Omar was a commissioner at the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights during the 2007-08 post-election violence. He said he should not be blamed since “they fixed themselves”.

“Don’t fix yourself and blame it on others,” he said, adding that he valued humanity, and that was why together with other human rights activists, he talked openly about killed Mungiki youths, when leaders from Central remained quiet over the police atrocities.

“During the post-election violence we talked about injustices witnessed. When people were praising Mr Kenyatta for sinking the ship loaded with drugs, I said it was wrong, and the next day the court held the same sentiments,” he said, insisting that the rule of law must be upheld.

The senator said that he did not support the Al-Shabaab terror group.

“Police are arresting our youth and calling them terrorists. You lock them in excess of 24 hours and then you go to court asking for more time. You cannot fool all the people all the time!”

He said all communities and suspects must be protected constitutionally.

The senator has been accused on social media of fixing the two top leaders.
