Senator Omar launches manifesto, promises to revive economy

The Wiper party governor candidate for Mombasa, Hassan Omar, will form a commission of inquiry to investigate illegal allocation and acquisition of property in the county if elected.

Mr Omar also said those who illegally acquired houses and land would be prosecuted and property returned to rightful owners.

MANIFESTO
During the launch of his manifesto at Bandari College on Friday, just 16 days to the General Election, Mr Omar said his administration would emphasise civic engagement, reorganise priorities of the county government and develop a blue print for socio-economic progress.

Mr Omar’s rivals are incumbent Hassan Ali Joho (ODM), Suleiman Shahbal of Jubilee and Vibrant Democratic Party’s Hezron Awiti.

ACCOUNTABILITY
Mr Omar said he is the best person to lead Mombasa “because I am scandal free”.

He promised high levels of accountability “where every penny counts”.

“We will lay the foundation for the Mombasa we want,” the senator said.

BARAZA
He promised to reorganise the county Public Service Board and promote public participation when engaging with the national government.

“We will go to the people and ask them what they want,” he said, adding that the manifesto was drafted after wide consultations with residents.

“We will form a citizens’ forum that will be called Baraza la Wananchi to engage the county government."

DEVOLUTION
Mr Omar said his government will promote true devolution, integrity, servant leadership and full participation of every resident.

“We believe that public participation is not possible without ensuring access to information including enacting a county-centric access to information,” he said.

He said that devolution is anchored on the three pillars of economic, politics and governance and social justice.

“Progressive politics and good governance will become the foundation of our county’s prosperity and my administration shall endeavor to put the people first,” he said.

ECONOMY
He promised to deliver on land issues, the environment, infrastructure and housing.

“I promise to provide a vibrant Mombasa economy based on manufacturing, services, transport, hotels, tourism, agriculture and small scale businesses,” he said.

He pledged a healthy county, better education, security and safety and a better system of waste disposal and management.
