Only two Kabete aspirants will vote in by-election

Mr George Mungai (Independent), Mr Isaiah Ndirangu (Party of Democratic Unity), Mr Kavore Kariuki (Narc Kenya), Mr Kiriro wa Ngugi (Democratic Party), Mr Newton Njenga  (National Vision Party), Mr Paul  Kariuki (Party of Kenya) and Mr Wilson Karanga (ODM) are also in the race.

Only two out of the nine candidates contesting the Kabete by-election will vote on Monday, the Independent Electoral and Boundary’s Commission has said.

The other seven are not registered as voters in the constituency, which will go to the polls today to elect a new MP after Mr George Muchai was killed by gunmen early this year.
There are 62,470 registered voters in the constituency which also has 33 polling centres and 92 polling stations.

Electoral materials were already in the constituency and were to be distributed in the polling stations by last evening, said the returning officer, Ms Esther Wanjiku, who is also the Kabete IEBC coordinator.

She was speaking at a  press briefing at Wangige Primary School yesterday. The school will serve as the tallying centre.

The commission has deployed 750 officers to oversee the voting, while 184 police officers will man the polling stations, with 20 at the tallying centre.

VOTER IDENTIFICATION

“The polling stations will be open by 6am and will be closed at 5pm,” said Ms Wanjiku.

Ms Eva Nyambura, the commission’s regional ICT officer said voter identification would be done digitally through a hand held electronic voter identification device.

Voters and the public can get the results through an “IEBC elections” mobile phone application available on phones using the Android operating system.

Former Embakasi MP Ferdinand Waititu is seeking to capture the seat on a Jubilee Alliance Party (JAP) ticket.

Should he win, he will become the party’s first legislator.

Only Mr Kiriro, a social commentator and Mr Njenga are registered voters in the constituency and only they will vote. Yesterday Mr Waititu and Kavore joined faithful at ACK church Kahuho in the constituency for a fund raiser.
