The Orange Democratic Movement Friday said it does not believe an opinion poll showing that President Kenyatta would trounce party leader Raila Odinga if elections were held today.

The party said the study was propaganda aimed at diverting attention from insecurity and corruption.

Research firm Ipsos Synovate, in a poll commissioned and published by The Star Friday, said President Kenyatta would get 49 per cent of the votes while Mr Odinga would get 28 per cent.

The opposition party members Friday said Kenyans should focus on how the incumbent was performing instead of comparing him with the Opposition.

ODM Political Affairs Director Opiyo Wandayi said it was not yet clear if Mr Odinga would contest in the next elections and it was therefore wrong to speculate about his performance.

“Globally, opinion polls conducted mid-term are about gauging the job of incumbents and their chances of re-election. It cannot be a popularity contest between them and non-existent challengers,” Mr Opiyo, who is also the Ugunja MP, said.

The official said it was surprising to see a poll approving Mr Kenyatta’s presidency yet Kenyans were witnessing rising insecurity, including the April 2 Garissa University College massacre.
