Four days before his death, Senator Otieno Kajwang’ was involved in an accident on the Sondu-Oyugis road.

The senator was going for an ODM delegates meeting attended by the party leader, Mr Raila Odinga, in Oyugis.

As the local senator, Mr Kajwang’ was the host and had to be at the venue in Oyugis to receive the ODM leader.

According to a police report dated November 14, Mr Kajwang’ left Kisumu International Airport shortly after 10am in a silver Toyota Prado KBL 272L, with his driver, Mr Richard Oduor, and a bodyguard.

SWERVED TO THE LEFT

According to Mr Oduor, on reaching Othoro centre, he swerved to the left to avoid a pothole. He lost control of the vehicle, which rolled before landing on its left side.

The vehicle was damaged — the windows were shattered and both side mirrors broken.

It was later towed to Oyugis Police Station.

Bodyguard Michael Ouma’s right hand was fractured and he was admitted to Matata Nursing Home in serious condition.

Mr Kajwang’, who was seated at the back left, complained of pains. Nevertheless, he called for another car that picked them up.

“The senator and the driver complained of pains,” read the police report.

Police visited the scene and called the senator to confirm if he was fine.

Mr Odinga on Wednesday said the senator had told him that he had been involved in a road accident on Friday at Oyugis, in which his vehicle was extensively damaged.

“We asked him to go and see a doctor; he came back and told us that he was okay,” recalled Mr Odinga.
