Parliament receives petition for removal of EACC chairman Mumo Matemu

The National Assembly has received a petition seking to remove the head of the anti-graft commission and one of his deputies.

The petition has been read out by Speaker Justin Muturi.

Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission chairman Mumo Matemu and member Irene Keino will now be the subject of investigations by the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee.

Signed by one Oriaro Geoffrey, the petition seeks to remove Mr Matemu and Ms Keino for alleged incompetence and violation of the Constitution.

Mr Oriaro claims that the chairman and the commissioner are in "serious violation of the Constitution, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission Act, the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act as well as the Penal Code".

The EACC chairman was recently involved in a dispute with the commission's CEO, Halakhe Waqo, over the suspension of deputy CEO Michael Mubea, although the two later said they had resolved their differences.
