The New Ford-Kenya party's National Executive Council meets Tuesday to discuss who will replace their leader, Eugene Wamalwa.

The party’s top decision-making organ said in a statement that they would “hold a meeting to decide the new party leader to replace” Mr Wamalwa, who was appointed Water and Irrigation Cabinet secretary.

The meeting comes in the wake of reports of division among members of the National Executive Council (NEC) over who will be selected to replace Mr Wamalwa.

The party’s constitution states that Mr Wamalwa will relinquish his position as chairman and concentrate on running his ministry.

The cracks in the party over the succession emerged following conflicting statements by officials.

New Ford-Kenya Youth League chairman and NEC member Evans Mangoli said it was too early to make succession calls on the party spokesperson’s position.

He criticised calls by another NEC member, Julius Bakasa, who floated Governor Lusaka’s name, and said a meeting would be held to decide on who to lead the party.

Mr Bakasa said the Bungoma governor had a strong backing of the NEC and party members.

However, Mr Mangoli said it was wrong for some members to begin floating names when the NEC had not convened a meeting.
