A bonding retreat for Cord governors and senators in Arusha has been postponed after its leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka flew out of the country.

Mr Odinga left for Germany on Monday while Mr Musyoka travelled to Britain on Sunday, forcing organisers of the meeting to change the dates.

On Tuesday, Senate Minority Whip Johnstone Muthama said the meeting, which was scheduled for this weekend, had now been pushed to next week, after the return of the two principals.

The meeting was to discuss the coalition’s push for the referendum, which some Cord governors are opposing, among other issues.

HOUSEKEEPING

“We have many issues to talk about. This was to be a kind of housekeeping meeting,” said Mr Muthama.

Some Cord officials have proposed that members of county assemblies should also be invited to the meeting.

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero is leading a group of Cord governors opposed to the referendum and is among those targeted at the retreat.

“There has been a proposal for a retreat involving governors, senators and MCAs. It could be held towards next week,” said Mr Odinga’s spokesman, Mr Denis Onyango.

A few weeks ago, Mr Odinga, Mr Musyoka and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula drove to a Mt Kilimanjaro area for a secret meeting to discuss the referendum.
