Raila to launch new website as he gears up for the 2017 polls

What you need to know:

  • Mr Odinga took to his twitter handle @RailaOdinga to announce his planned launch with a cryptic message that “the wait is finally over!”.
  • The new website is being spearheaded by his daughter Winnie Odinga with the help of some ODM members.
  • Ms Odinga said that the website was not a platform to prepare the ODM leader for the next elections, which he has indicated he may vie for the presidency on a Cord ticket.

Cord leader Raila Odinga is set to launch a new website, on Friday signalling his readiness to take a stab at the Presidency in the next elections.

But the creator of the website, Mr Odinga’s daughter, Winnie, declined to say if it was a build-up to the 2017 presidential elections.

She said that Mr Odinga will make a statement on the matter.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader is expected to run for the presidency in 2017, for the third time.

Mr Odinga took to his twitter handle @RailaOdinga to announce his planned launch with a cryptic message that “the wait is finally over!”.

The Cord leader states that the new website—rao.co.ke—will give him a better platform to reach out to his supporters.

“I am excited to announce the launch of my new website this Friday. This site will give me a chance to share insight into my personal life,” he said on Twitter.

On social media, his followers were commenting on it under the hashtag #RAOZinduka.

The new website is being spearheaded by his daughter Winnie Odinga with the help of some ODM members.

Mr Odinga yesterday referred the Nation to Ms Odinga for issues regarding the website. “Speak to the creator of the website to answer your questions,” he said on phone.

Ms Odinga said that the website was not a platform to prepare the ODM leader for the next elections, which he has indicated he may vie for the presidency on a Cord ticket.

“This will be an interactive website through which the former Prime Minister can communicate with people in Kenya and outside the world better. A website where people will see Raila away from politics and get an insight into his personal life,” she said on phone.

“It (idea for a website) came out of call by people for them to see Raila the person at home, what Mama Ida (Mr Odinga’s wife) does here in Nairobi and in Bondo and such matters,” she said.
She said: “Even though we worked with some members, the new website is completely separate from the party.”

If he decides to seek Cord’s ticket for the presidency in 2017, Mr Odinga will face off with his co-principals, Mr Kalonzo Musyoka of Wiper Democratic Movement and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula of Ford Kenya.
