William Ruto distributes Sh1.1b resettlement cash to IDPs

Deputy President William Ruto on Saturday started his two-day tour of IDP camps in Nakuru, Uasin Gishu and Bomet counties where he will distribute Sh1.1 billion meant for last lap of resettlement.
Mr Ruto said his mission is to ensure the issues concerning IDPs are dealt with and that all the affected families live peacefully and with dignity.
Speaking at Teret IDP camp in Njoro, Nakuru County Mr Ruto said the government has set aside Sh2 billion for the resettlement of all the remaining IDPs who have been living in tents for close to a decade.
“Today and tomorrow (Sunday) I will be visiting IDP camps in the three counties to give 5,387 families Sh1.1 billion. Each of the families will be getting Sh200,000 to help them buy land and start afresh,” said Mr Ruto.
Those displaced by the Post-Election Violence have living in deplorable condition under tattered tents and makeshift structures for eight years while the Mau Forest evictees have been out in the cold for seven years.
The IDP camps in Baringo, hosting people displaced by insecurity in the North Rift, have also been factored in the programme.
The money will benefit 25,000 people has already been deposited in the individual accounts of the IDPs at the Kenya Commercial Bank.
The Deputy President, accompanied by Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru, handed over payments to IDPs in Maai Mahiu and Kikopey in Gilgil.
He later visited camps in Teret in Njoro and Athinai in Mogotio accompanied by Devolution Principal Secretary Ms Mwanamaka Amani Mabruki, Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua and his deputy Mr Joseph Ruto.
Also present were Njoro MP Mr Joseph Kiuna and his Kabete counterpart Mr Ferdinand Waititu.
He will visit IDPs in Uasin Gishu and Bomet on Sunday.
Mr Ruto noted that the lists of IDPs had been inflated but the government resolved to pay all of them.
“I know that the number has been changing but I believe that after this round, we will not hear of any more camps,” said Mr Ruto.
He urged the beneficiaries to use the cash given to them wisely to better their lives by engaging in income generating activities.
