Senate gives Wa Iria date to fight impeachment bid

Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria will begin his defence against a campaign to impeach him on Wednesday.
A committee formed by the Senate to look into the impeachment request by members of the county assembly has scheduled hearings for Wednesday and Thursday.
The team chaired by Kitui Senator David Musila will look into more than 20 accusations levelled against the governor and then present its recommendations to the House.
The Senate will then hold a special sitting next week to receive the report before making a decision on whether or not to send Mr Wairia home.
During debate to form the special committee, many senators said the accusations were serious but that the governor deserved to be heard.
“The charges read to us are very serious and many of them are of a criminal nature. The House leaders have selected the most qualified members to look at the request to impeach the governor,” said Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi.
Minority Leader Moses Wetang’ula said the charges were “extremely serious” but asked the team to give the governor a fair opportunity to respond to the accusations since he was innocent until proven guilty.
