What you need to know:

  • The governor was scheduled to attend a Sunday service in Yala.
  • Mr Rasanga said he did not attend the Sunday service because he did not want to be involved in political bickering.

Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga on Sunday avoided returning to Yala Township in Gem constituency, where rowdy youths almost beat him.

The governor was scheduled to attend a Sunday service in Yala but instead went to Rang’ala Catholic Church in Ugunja constituency.

Those close to him said they had information that some youths had been paid to heckle him at the Yala church.

Mr Rasanga said he did not attend the Sunday service because he did not want to be involved in political bickering.

WILL NOT BE COWED

“I will not be cowed by anybody trying to order me around as well as the demands by MPs criticising my leadership,” he said at a public rally in Ugunja.

He had vowed to return to Yala for prayers saying he had the right to visit any part of the county.

Meanwhile, politicians and opinion leaders in the county have sounded the alarm that the wrangles between the governor and local leaders could delay development and be used against Opposition leader Raila Odinga in the next elections.

They argue that should devolution fail in Siaya, Mr Odinga’s home county, he would be blamed for not supervising development in the county.
