President Uhuru Kenyatta will attend the inauguration of Tanzania’s President-elect John Magufuli on Thursday.

A statement from the Tanzania Government says Mr Kenyatta will be joined by other leaders, including Robert Mugabe (Zimbabwe), Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Jacob Zuma (South Africa), Joseph Kabila (DRC), Filipe Nyusi (Mozambique) and Edgar Lungu (Zambia).

It will be held at the Uhuru Grounds in Dar es Salaam.

Earlier, State House had remained tight-lipped on whether President Kenyatta would grace the event.

State House Senior Director of Communications Munyori Buku could not confirm or deny that Mr Kenyatta would attend the inauguration, saying he was in the dark.

“I cannot really confirm that. I honestly do not know whether he will be in attendance,” said Mr Buku.

However, a top official in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who sought anonymity because he is not authorised to speak on behalf of the presidency, disclosed that arrangements were under way to ensure Mr Kenyatta attends the ceremony.
