What you need to know:

  • In a statement on Wednesday, the governor said the trend the world over was to have two or three major political parties.
  • Prof Kibwana, who was elected on a Muungano Party ticket, said Jubilee had made “a head start because it has already chosen its presidential and deputy presidential candidates”.

Jubilee’s strategy to have small parties that are allied to it dissolve into one bloc should not be dismissed offhand, Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana has said.

In a statement on Wednesday, the governor said the trend the world over was to have two or three major political parties.

Prof Kibwana, however, said the threat to the democratic progress arising from this merger would be the failure by the political blocs to drop ethnic ideologies and, therefore, the politics of exclusion.

FAIR NOMINATIONS

Prof Kibwana, who was elected on a Muungano Party ticket, said Jubilee had made “a head start because it has already chosen its presidential and deputy presidential candidates”.

He said Cord “should also address this issue before it is too late”. But, he added: “One of the most serious challenges will be nomination.”

The governor said a new electoral team may not be able to handle party nominations even when requested and that it might be a good idea to create by law an institution to help in that duty.

“Just as we want free and fair nominations at the General Election, there must be free and fair party nominations,” he said.
