  • President Kenyatta had on two separate occasions sent out strong signals that he may not assent to the Bill

President Uhuru Kenyatta has rejected a Bill seeking to sack officials running the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

The President cited reservations about clauses relating to the hiring of commissioners and the removal of the secretariat as the reasons for returning the Bill to the House.

The Bill, moved by Kiminini MP Chris Wamalwa, proposed the dismissal of EACC Chief Executive Halakhe Waqo and his deputy, Michael Mubea.

The National Assembly voted 70-39 to send Mr Waqo and Mr Mubea packing.

Mr Wamalwa rallied 70 MPs to endorse his amendment to a Bill sponsored by the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee and originally aimed at increasing the number of commissioners and making them serve part-time.

President Kenyatta had on two separate occasions sent out strong signals that he may not assent to the Bill as he feels it may undermine the war on graft.
