Uhuru Kenyatta resumes duties as President
President Uhuru Kenyatta has resumed his duties as President after legal instruments appointing William Ruto as acting President expired at 6pm on Wednesday.
A State House spokesperson made the announcement in a posting on social media.
"The legal instrument appointing DP William Ruto as Acting President expired this evening, at 6pm Nairobi time. HE the President Uhuru Kenyatta has resumed substantive duties after attending ICC Status Conference as private citizen," he said.
President Kenyatta had appointed his deputy, William Ruto, as acting President for the duration he would be away attending his case at the International Criminal Court.
Mr Kenyatta made the unprecedented announcement during an address to a special session of Parliament on Monday.
He invoked Article 147, section 3 of the Constitution that states: "Subject to Article 134, when the President is absent or is temporarily incapacitated, and during any other period that the President decides, the Deputy President shall act as the President."
CITY PARADE
The President explained that the decision to hand power to his deputy is meant to ensure that the sovereignty and democratic will of Kenyans will not be subjected to a foreign jurisdiction.
And Interior Secretary Joseph ole Lenku has announced that the President will hold a procession through city streets upon his return from The Hague on Thursday morning.
In a statement, the Cabinet secretary said the President's parade will end at his Harambee House office after weaving through the city.
"I invite Kenyans to turn out and welcome His Excellency the President back home.
"The President will use the following route: Outer Ring road, Jogoo road, Landhies, Haile Selassie Avenue, Harambee Avenue to Harambee house," Lenku's statement said.
