President Uhuru Kenyatta has warned the opposition alliance Cord against holding protests to demand the removal of top officials of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission.

The President said the opposition should follow the Constitution in their quest to remove IEBC commissioners.

"The matter should be taken to Parliament…we shall abide by what they (MPs) decide,” he said Wednesday while on a visit in Nyamira County. He is accompanied by his deputy William Ruto.

He accused opposition leaders of taking advantage of innocent Kenyans to achieve their agenda.

“Let’s not punish innocent people by taking them to the streets, where they are likely to be tear-gassed by police for no reason at all," he said.

He said violent protests would discourage investors.

Mr Ruto urged Kenyans to be united as no one would want to witness a repeat of the 2007/2008 chaos.

"All we want is peace. Kenyans must now be given an opportunity to build their country… (We do not want) mass action or any form of violence, we do not want to go through that route again,” said the Deputy President.

The President and his deputy are touring Nyamira Country. President Kenyatta is expected to commission Nyamira Level 5 Hospital.

He is also expected to commission Ekerubo Gieta Technical Training Institute and launch the Mosobeti-Kebirigo road.
