The hunt for votes in Malindi constituency intensified Wednesday as Deputy President William Ruto returned to the area to campaign for Jubilee Party candidate Philip Charo.

Mr Ruto, accompanied by Jubilee leaders, addressed residents at several stopovers as they headed to a major rally at the Mutere Karima Primary School grounds.

The Deputy President asked residents to vote wisely in the March 7 by-election.

“You will have the opportunity on March 7 to choose between our competitors, who keep telling you about the problems you face, and Jubilee, which has demonstrated commitment to solving your problems,” he said.

He challenged locals to support Jubilee to ensure they are in the government after the by-election.

“Jubilee is ready to serve all Kenyans without any discrimination as demonstrated in the appointment of Dan Kazungu to the Cabinet irrespective of his political affiliation,” said Mr Ruto.

Mr Ruto hit out at Cord leaders, saying most of them were in government but did not solve problems facing people in the coastal region.

“They are just good at speaking about problems in the region but they did not take action when they had a chance,” he said.

The Deputy President was accompanied by National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale, MPs Gideon Mung’aro (Kilifi North), Mustafa Iddi (Kilifi South), Khatib Mwashetani (Lunga Lunga), Ibrahim Sane (Garsen), Peter Shehe (Ganze), Kimani Ngunjiri (Bahati) and Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete) and nominated Senator Emma Mbura.

The MPs urged Malindi residents to shift their political allegiance from the opposition to Jubilee, saying the government was committed to developing the region.

“Why should you waste your votes by gambling with the opposition when it is obvious that they are masters of failure in every election?" said Mr Mung'aro.
