Anne Waiguru promises to improve housing in Kirinyaga

Former Devolution Cabinet Secretary Anne Waiguru has pledged to eradicate poverty in Kirinyaga if elected the governor.

She expressed surprise that more than 50 years after Independence, majority of the county’s residents still lived in mud houses.

“I have gone round the county and I have noted with concern that residents are residing in mud-walled houses due to poverty,” Ms Waiguru told hundreds of residents as she campaigned at Murinduko village in the vote-rich Mwea Constituency.

Accompanied by her running mate, Peter Ndambiri, the former cabinet minister wondered how such residents could contribute towards the growth of the county.

“For residents to be able to work hard and participate in building of the region, they must have good housing and my government will assist them,”  Ms Waiguru said as she criss-crossed the vast constituency seeking votes

Noting that many residents could not build decent permanent houses due to poverty, she said her government would initiate many income-generating projects in the region.

so that the residents some who were living below poverty line could earn good money and put up decent houses.

“I’m ready to improve the living standards of my people who have been undergoing untold suffering for decades,” she said.

Accompanied by her running mate, Peter Ndambiri, the former CS called on residents to ensure a leadership change if they want to benefit.

“I’m a technocrat and I will use the knowledge I have to bail my people out of the problems they have been facing,” she said.

Ms Waiguru also decried youth unemployment in the region and promised to address the problem.

“Youth are idling around because they do not have work to do. I will create jobs for them so that they can earn a living,” she said.

Ms Waiguru  insisted that the opinion poll that indicated that she was leading was a correct one and accused her rivals of panicking.

“The opinion poll by Trends and Insights for Africa that showed that I’m ahead of my rivals was not cooked up. My rivals are dismissing the poll because they are sensing defeat,” she said.

And Mr Ndambiri  exuded confidence that he and his boss will take over the county’s leadership.

“We have campaigned well and with the support of the residents we shall triumph,” he said.
