Walter Barasa extradition case moved to December

What you need to know:

  • The High Court had originally set the date of the hearing to November 11
  • Mr Barasa is accused of seeking to influence three prosecution witnesses

The case on the International Criminal Court arrest warrant issued against journalist Walter Barasa has been moved to December 4, 2013 due to his bereavement after the death of his mother.

The High Court had originally set the date of the hearing as November 11, with Principal Judge Justice Richard Mwongo also ruling that the two cases touching on the arrest warrant against Barasa run concurrently.

The ICC wants Mr Barasa extradited to The Hague to face charges of interfering with witnesses in the crimes against humanity cases against Deputy President William Ruto and journalist Joshua Sang.

Mr Barasa, who is based in Eldoret, is accused of seeking to influence three prosecution witnesses after allegedly promising to give the witnesses more than Sh2.9 million cumulatively.

ICC Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda delivered the warrant to the government on October 2 and requested it to arrest Mr Barasa and hand him over to the court to face three charges. (READ: I want more arrested: Bensouda)

“He will appear before ICC judges on charges of corruptly influencing and attempting to corruptly influence a person believed to be a prosecution witness,” Ms Bensouda said.

If found guilty, Mr Barasa could be jailed for five years.
