Leader of majority in the National Assembly Aden Duale Wednesday said the Jubilee administration was ready for the referendum although it does not support it.

He said the government had no regrets for not engaging the Opposition in a national dialogue, adding that the Constitution had created institutions to deal with issues in the referendum proposals.

“Dialogue must have decorum but Cord leader Raila Odinga came with threats. The dialogue they were demanding was laced with arrogance. You saw those people carrying banners with slogans that the President must go,” Mr Duale said during a talk show on a local TV channel.

MAKING AN ABOUT-TURN

He was responding to panellists who wanted to know if Jubilee could have reacted differently.

The panellists said that the ruling coalition invited the referendum after shunning calls for dialogue.

He denied that Kenyans had lost faith in the institutions that were created to safeguard their interests through the new Constitution and instead challenged the Opposition to garner enough signatures to support the push for a plebiscite.

“We will be going to the people and put our question if indeed time is ripe for the referendum” he said.
