William Ruto, Joshua Sang ICC trial fails to take off

The trial of Deputy President William Ruto and journalist Joshua arap Sang before the International Criminal Court did not take place on Wednesday as expected.

According to ICC’s tentative calendar for this year, Wednesday’s trial had been listed as cancelled .

No explanations were given for the cancellations.

There equally, will be no hearings for the rest of the week as well as next week.

This comes a day after the 13th prosecution witness, who testified under pseudonym P-0442 completed his testimony.

The witness testified under the protective measures of facial pixilation and voice distortion. Parts of the testimonies were given in private session, in order to preserve the confidentiality of the identity of the witness.  

Mr Ruto and Mr Sang are facing crimes against humanity charges for the 2008 post-election violence that led to the deaths of at least 1000 people, with 650,000 others being rendered homeless.

Mr Ruto has been accused of being criminally responsible as an indirect co-perpetrator for the crimes against humanity of murder, deportation or forcible transfer of population and persecution.

Mr Sang, on the other hand, is accused of having contributed to the commission of the similar crimes as the Deputy President.

The trial, that began on September 10 last year is being heard by Trial Chamber V(A), which is composed of Judges Chile Eboe-Osuji (presiding), Olga Herrera Carbuccia and Robert Fremr.
