Two MPs said to be named in a corruption dossier pleaded their innocence before Deputy President William Ruto.

Ganze MP Peter Shehe and Kinango MP Gonzi Rai accused the media of rushing to publish “unfounded reports” about them.

However, Mr Ruto, who was the chief guest at a festival in Shanzu Teachers Training College, reaffirmed the government’s stance on corruption and asked the leaders to step aside.

In his State of the Nation speech in Parliament on Thursday, President Kenyatta told public officials mentioned in corruption deals to step aside and pave the way for investigations.

The two MPs’ names appear in a confidential EACC report handed to National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi by President Kenyatta.

“We have made a decision as government. Those involved in corruption must face the full force of the law,” Mr Ruto said.

He added that a leader of any institution must be held accountable for his or her actions.

“As leaders, we have a duty and a responsibility to make sure that public resources entrusted in our care and management are used for the benefit of the people of Kenya,” Mr Ruto said, to the dismay of the MPs.
