Wiper dismisses Nasa cracks claim, say it supports Raila

Wiper Party Secretary General Hassan Omar has said there are no cracks in the National Super Alliance (Nasa) following the release of its line-up for the August polls.

Mr Omar said in Mombasa on Sunday that the coalition was not faced with any threats of divisions adding that the divergent views on its presidential flagbearer was “healthy evidence of democracy”.

“I think a set of divergent opinions by one or two characters that are not satisfied with a certain decision is not evidence of cracks. It is often evidence of democracy and divergence, not division,” he said.

The Mombasa Senator said the Nasa deal that saw ODM leader Raila Odinga named presidential candidate and Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka his running mate was the "best consensus" the five principals could arrive at.

“We do appreciate some of the concerns that have been made but these concerns are not evidence of cracks or disunity. There are legitimate concerns raised across the spectrum.

“On behalf of the Wiper party, I want to make it abundantly clear that we are part of that arrangement and that we appreciate the concerns made by some of our members,” said Mr Omar.

NYENZE OPINION

He told journalists at his office at Renaissance Centre in Kizingo that the National Assembly Minority Leader Francis Nyenze should join the drive of popularising Nasa.

“We respect his opinion but we also want him to tone down so that we can move on and that whatever interest he thought the Kamba will secure through Kalonzo presidency, those interest can be secured as Kambas and Kenyans through Kalonzo as a deputy president," he said.

He added: "Even those of us who wanted a Kalonzo presidency it is not because we wanted a president for Ukambani but a symbol of national unity.”

On Saturday, Mr Nyenze said it would be difficult for the Kamba community to vote for Mr Odinga in the August polls as they wanted Mr Musyoka to be the Nasa flag bearer.
